Guardiola: constant development crucial for City’s success

Pep Guardiola’s men will kick off Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (UK) as Premier League leaders, aiming for a record-breaking 35th top-flight win in our final home game of 2021.

City have won each of our last eight Premier League games, scoring 24 times while keeping five clean sheets in the process.

It’s a hugely impressive comeback leading up to the busy winter calendar, and Cancelo is hoping we can keep moving forward into the New Year.

“We are a very strong team and we are in good shape at the moment,” said the Portugal international.

“It’s important that we all give our best so that we can achieve our goals at the end of the season which are to win as many trophies as possible.

“We have the Premier League, the Champions League and soon the FA Cup to fight until the end of the season.

“I think Liverpool and Chelsea are both very strong teams and they will be our competition in the title race.

“They have a different style of football from ours, but both teams are really strong.

“I think all three teams show that we are the main candidates to win the Premier League trophy.”

In a phenomenal team effort, Cancelo has been one of City’s most outstanding performers so far this campaign, combining defensive solidity with a powerful offensive threat from the full-back.

His exploits have even led Portuguese coach Fernando Santos to describe him recently as the best full-back in world football.

Although the City man refuses to be carried away by such praise, he is happy to see his hard work and professionalism pay off in his performances.

“Obviously, it is a source of pride if someone [Fernando Santos] says you are the best in the world. I work hard every day to be the best I can be, in training and in games, ”he said.

“I’m a 24/7 professional, I live my work to the fullest, so if someone says you’re the best at your job, that’s a reason to be proud.

“Fernando Santos is the manager of the national team, so that’s an even bigger source of pride. I think that’s a big compliment, especially coming from him because I consider him an excellent manager.

In 24 appearances so far this campaign in all competitions, Cancelo has recorded three incredible goals and seven assists from the defense.

But while the 27-year-old is delighted with his current form throughout the campaign to date, he insists the focus needs to be on his role in the team, rather than his offensive contributions. .

He said: “People usually look at statistics a lot: goals and assists. I don’t watch them. I think my last season was very good too, but obviously this season my numbers are splendid.

“I understand that some people would just look at your stats, but we also have players playing at a good level whose numbers don’t reflect their performance.

“For example, Bernardo Silva is an exceptional player, this season has good numbers, but last season his statistics were not as good as they are today, and yet I consider him one of the best players in the world .

“I only focus on the good performance and I try to contribute with my game to the success of the team. “
