BLACKSBURG, Va. — The No. 15 Fighting Irish traveled to Blacksburg, Va. to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday afternoon. The Irish eventually fell to the Hokies 13-12.

The Irish had seven different goalscorers in Jackie Wolak (3), Mary Kelly Doherty (2), Madison Ahern (1), Maddie Howe (1), Kelly Denes (1) and Jane McAvoy (1).

Kelly Denes led the Irish with seven draw checks with teammate Madison Mote collecting five. Bridget Deehan finished the day with 13 saves.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN

The Irish opened the contest immediately entering the board with a goal from Kasey Choma on a free position attempt. The next three goals would all come from the Irish as Mary Kelly Doherty, Madison Ahern and Jackie Wolak all put the ball in the back of the net to make it 4-0. Virginia Tech responded with two goals before Wolak added his second of the day to end the quarter with a 5-2 Irish lead.

Kelly Denes opened the second quarter for the Irish with a goal to push the Irish lead to 6-2. Virginia Tech then started a run that was stopped by Kasey Choma and Maddie Howe when they each scored. The Irish entered half-time with an 8-5 lead.

The third quarter opened with a run from Hokie that tied things at eight. A free position goal from Choma put the Irish back in front. Another Jane McAvoy goal extended the Irish lead to put them back at 10-8. Two goals from Hokie late in the third quarter would level the score again, at 10.

The fourth quarter opened with the first three minutes scoreless. The Hokies scored to break the scoreless streak putting them ahead of the Irish 12-10. Wolak put one on the board for the Irish with seven minutes left to put them within one, 12-11. Another goal from Doherty brought the Irish back to tie it at 12. Virginia Tech added one more to their tally to regain the lead and make the final score 13-12.

The Irish will stay on the road as they travel to Charlotte, NC for a neutral site game against #20 Jacksonville. The game will have live stats available.
