Team news

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to make changes for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third round clash with West Ham.

The Norwegian has already hinted that midfielder Jesse Lingard, who has scored after coming off the bench in each of his last two Premier League appearances against Newcastle and the Hammers on Sunday, will start against the club where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

Defenseman Phil Jones will return to the squad after a 20-month absence due to injury, while Alex Telles will also be involved following an ankle injury.

Jones, who has played more than 200 games in all competitions for the club, said last weekend he had been “through hell and back” as he battled injuries.

“I’m so happy for Phil,” Solskjaer said on the club’s website. “He did two 90 minutes [games] for the U23, played a few minutes behind closed doors and had no reaction on his knee. He worked very hard.

“He will be in the squad. It’s a good day for him and for us, and it’s something he deserved.

“I know what challenges he’s been through, mentally, thinking ‘will I ever play football again or even be able to walk again and play with the kids in the backyard.’

Forward Edinson Cavani (muscle tension) could return and goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson hope David de Gea will rest, while Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Diogo Dalot, Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, as well as the young Anthony Elanga, Teden Mengi, Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire, could enter in the running.

However, the game may come too soon for midfielder Amad (thigh) and striker Marcus Rashford (shoulder).
