Statistics on assault and use of force

0

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are responsible for upholding the laws of the country while protecting the civil rights and civil liberties of every individual with whom we interact. CBP’s power to enforce the law, even down to lethal force, rightly bears the burden of accountability, which includes integrity and transparency.

These data reflect assaults on CBP personnel and use of force based on incidents. For example, consider a hypothetical CBP use of a less lethal device against three subjects. This is counted as an incident requiring the use of force. Likewise, five subjects throwing stones at three CBP officers or officers are counted as one incident.

These statistics represent assaults and use of force involving authorized officers / agents during CBP operations only; out-of-service incidents are not included. Previously published statistics are sometimes revised on the basis of an internal review, the findings of investigations and decisions of the National Use of Force Review Board (NUFRB); therefore, these tables may not correspond to previously published statistics.
